Dec. 14 2019 - Holiday Vinyl Listening Event

Another Great Day in the Vinyl Listening Lounge Club.

On a cold, rainy day in NE Washington, DC, we had Radio Royalty in the House.

WPFW’s Dr. Nick Johnson, host of “Southern Soul Rumpin” and

Bill Wax, host of “Roots and Fruits” joined us for a very entertaining vinyl session. Two outstanding personalities with a ton of music knowledge and experience that provided snippets of music/musician trivia and knowledge. Many thanks go out to Nina Gilchrist at Provost restaurant for hosting our event. The music theme of the evening was the Christmas holidays with a small mixture any other genre.

Throughout the evening, the various songs were introduced with some account or story behind the song. The playlist included:

Get Up To Get Down - Brass Construction
This was the first song played with few in attendance. This tune was played again later in the session, was listened to by a greater number of attendees and got some folks on the dance floor.

I Don’t Need No Help - Valarie Simpson
I Wish It Would Rain - Aretha Franklin
Give Love On Christmas Day - Jackson 5
It’s Christmas Time - Smokey Robinson

Dr Nick gave us some of the background around the Temptations and their Christmas album.
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer - The Temptations
White Christmas - The Temptations
Click Song - Miriam Makeba

Bill Wax introduced us to Ry Cooder and provided some background into his music and the tune;
Tear Drops Will Fall - Ry Cooder
Tear Drops Will Fall - Wilson Pickett

Bill mentioned how this tune impacted him when he first heard it because of a recent breakup. Some 20+ years later, Bill heard an interview by Ry Cooder. Ry mentioned that the song was originally recorded by Wilson Pickett. Bill Wax found Wilson Pickett’s first recorded album. The second track on the album was “Tear Drops will Fall”. Wow! Wilson’s earlier version was clearly a different rendition from Ry Cooders’ version.

Stand By Me - Maurice White
After All - The Miracles
Joe Cool - BB King

Another kind of royalty was in the house as we welcomed Ms. Senior DC 1st runner up and Vinyl LLC member, Vanella Jackson-Crawford. She shared one of her favorite songs and that she knows we Can Can. This song set the room to swinging.
Yes We Can Can - The Pointer Sisters

Misty - Sarah Vaughn
Silent Night - The Temptations
Ave Maria - Stevie Wonder
Happy Music - Blackbyrds
Listen Here - Eddie Harris

The session ended with;

My Favorite Things - John Coltrane

A great time was had by everyone. Many hugs and well wishes for a Happy Holiday season were given to all..

Nov. 9 2019 - Celebrating 50 Years of Vinyl Music

image27

A chilly day in the neighborhood.  This was our first visit to Provost, another fine place to listen to vinyl, eat and engage with music lovers. Much thanks to Nina and staff at Provost.

Today’s vinyl session was a SHOWOFF!   Folks came with 50 years of Music on Vinyl.  We heard music released in the late 60’s to 2019.  A list across many music genres.

The two earliest released selections were;

California Dreaming by Wes Montgomery

Yes, I’m Ready  -  Barbara Mason

I introduced a selection that was released within the past two weeks.

Showoff by Black Violin

Black Violin is a relatively new American classically trained duo that play the violin in Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk, and Classical genres. We listened to Showoff while watching a projected view of the released Black Violin Showoff video.

Some of the other selections played were Showoffs as well;

Harlem River Drive  -  Bobby Humphrey

We Got It Made  -  Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band

Superfreak  - Rick James

Poinciana  -  MFSB

Fairy Tales  –  Anita Baker

Throughout and in between selections, we discussed, laughed, watched projected vinyl themed photos, danced, ate and drank.

My Sweet Lord  -  Nina Simone

Feel That You’re Feeling  -  Maze

This Old Heart of Mine  - The Supremes

Come and Get These Memories  -  The Supremes

Give It All You Got  -  Chuck Mangione

Let It Be Me  -  Gloria  Lynn

The last selection played was so relevant for current times.

Love’s in Need of Love Today  -  Stevie Wonder

A GREAT TIME WAS HAD BY ALL

We ended the session by officially recognizing two overdue new members;

Cheryl Owens and Rafeeq Owens

Stay tuned for our next vinyl session. Help me spread the word. Send to your friends and contacts. They like music too.
